Access to Work in the workplace

Does your hearing loss cause problems for you in the workplace? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. There are approximately 10 million people in this country with hearing loss. That’s about 1 in 6 and nearly 4 million are of working age.

A ‘long day at the office’ has a whole new meaning for those who have hearing loss. The workplace can be a challenging listening environment, The additional concentration and effort required to participate in meetings, conversations or networking events can be exhausting and frustrating. Not to mention the worry and insecurity that comes from feeling like you’re not able to do your job to the best of your abilities.

The Good News

If your hearing loss makes it difficult to do your job you can apply for extra funding support through the Access To Work scheme.

The Access To Work scheme is a government funded initiative which offers support based on your needs.  Through the scheme, both you and your employer can gain practical advice based on your individual requirements as well as receiving funding towards any employment costs which are incurred as a direct result of your hearing loss.

How much funding you get depends on an assessment of your individual circumstances but, for example, Access To Work grants can pay for:

  • Special equipment and software to help you with workplace activities such as answering the phone or participating in meetings
  • Support worker services to help you with workplace activities
  • British Sign Language interpreters and video relay service support, lip speakers or note takers
  • Help with transport to get you to and from work

Taking the first step

The first step, especially if you haven’t accessed the scheme before, is to arrange a workplace assessment. Then you’ll have to make your application online. To find out more about how to apply please click here.
